E cinematografia pe moarte? Ce putem numi un film clasic al erei noastre? Care dintre producțiile ultimilor 16 ani se pot ridica la nivelul unor capodopere precum The Searchers, The Godfather, The Rules of the Game, Seven Samurai sau Citizen Kane? La aceste întrebări au încercat să răspundă cei de la BBC și au alcătuit un Top 100 cu cele mai importante filme ale secolului XXI.

În clasamentul alcătuit pe baza voturilor a 177 de critici de film din 36 de țări diferite se regăsesc producții cinematografice precum „Pianistul” (Roman Polanski, 2002), „Spotlight” (Tom McCarthy, 2015), „Amélie” (Jean-Pierre Jeunet, 2001), „A.I. Artificial Intelligence” (Steven Spielberg, 2001), „Dogville” (Lars von Trier, 2003) sau „Under the Skin” (Jonathan Glazer, 2013), dar și animații precum „În căutarea lui Nemo” (Andrew Stanton, 2003) sau „WALL-E” (Andrew Stanton, 2008).

Culmea sau nu, recentul „The Revenant”, cu care Leonardo DiCaprio a câștigat mult așteptatul premiu Oscar… nu se găsește în listă. Și-a găsit un loc, în schimb, „Inception” (2010), pe locul 51.

O surpriză plăcută pentru noi, români, este prezența lui Cristian Mungiu în acest clasament, cu filmul „4 luni, 3 săptămâni și 2 zile”, pe un loc onorabil: locul 15!

În vârful topului se află filmul „Mulholland Drive” (2001), în regia lui David Lynch. În concluzie, cei de la BBC Culture susțin că cinematografia nu moare, doar se transformă.
