Criticii susțin că 2023 a fost un an excelent în materie de filme, iar cum la final de an, ca de fiecare dată, apar diverse clasamente, (inclusiv) cele mai prestigioase publicații s-au înghesuit cu diferite top-uri, printre care cu cele mai bune filme ale anului.

Listele sunt, firește, subiective și nu există un consens clar în ceea ce privește filmele pe primele locuri, dar câteva titluri sunt, totuși, predominante, cum ar fi „Past Lives” (Celine Song), „Anatomy of a Fall” (Justine Triet) și „Fallen Leaves” (Aki Kaurismäki), sau mai celebrele „Killers of the Flower Moon” (Martin Scorsese), „Oppenheimer” (Christopher Nolan) și „Barbie” (Greta Gerwig).

Cea mai respectată publicație în domeniu este revista Sight and Sound, cea care a publicat, în urmă cu un an, noul clasament actualizat odată la zece ani al celor mai bune filme din toate timpurile, dar acum, la final de an (chiar ieri), a dedicat pagini întregi și celor mai bune filme din 2023. Acesta nu este un singur clasament, ci nu mai puțin de 106 liste Top 10, alcătuite individual de către editorii și colaboratorii revistei.

Listele Sight and Sound se găsesc aici, menționăm doar că filmele predominante sunt „Poor Things” (Yorgos Lanthimos), „Barbie” (Greta Gerwig), „Inside the Yellow Cocoon Shell” (Pham Thien An), „Killers of the Flower Moon” (Martin Scorsese), „Past Lives” (Celine Song) și „The Zone of Interest” (Jonathan Glazer) și apar în mai multe clasamente și două filme românești, „Do Not Expect Too Much from the End of the World” (Radu Jude) și „R.M.N.” (Cristian Mungiu).

Site-ul RogerEbert.com nu a alcătuit un clasament, ci doar un catalog cu filme recomandate (vezi aici), în timp ce The Guardian a alcătuit două clasamente, un Top 50 cu filme britanice și un Top 50 cu filme americane, însă niciunul nu este complet, decât de la locurile 50 până la 9, urmând (cel mai probabil) a fi completate în următoarele zile.

Pe primul loc se află, în schimb, un film deosebit de apreciat de critici în acest an, fiind prezent în majoritatea clasamentelor de final de an, chiar pe primul loc în mai multe cazuri: „Past Lives” – filmul de debut al regizoarei/scenaristei Celine Song.
